• History:

The mother city has experienced housing shortages since about 1835. As a result of the abolition of slavery, coloured and Malay people who had previously lived on their master’s property needed housing. Several housing projects were undertaken. Post World War 2 there were almost 3000 houses in 14 housing estates all over Cape Town. By 1972 there were almost 30 000

These estates were segregated and intended to cater for the resettlement of coloureds who were forcibly removed from areas in the city declared as “white” areas. Mannenburg is one of these places
