Delft

Delft is a suburb on the Cape Flats in Cape Town, located between Philippi and Blue Downs. It forms part of the City of Cape Town metropolitan area and is primarily residential, with schools, community facilities and small local business areas. The suburb is connected to the N2 via regional roads, providing access to central Cape Town and surrounding areas.

The Cape Flats is a flat, low-lying coastal plain made up of ancient dunes, sandy soils and scattered wetlands. At around 46–50 metres above sea level, the area is suitable for large-scale housing developments but is prone to poor drainage and occasional flooding.

History of Delft

This suburb was established in the late 1980s and early 1990s. It was initially developed as a government housing project to address the growing need for affordable housing in Cape Town. Named after the Dutch city, there was a farm with that name in this area. Many Dutch colonists had farms in the area, which they named after towns back in the Netherlands, like Rotterdam and Delft. The place was special because of the medical research centre where Dr Christian Barnard did his heart transplant research on animals. Delft was one of the first planned settlements created during the final years of apartheid. The township was designed to accommodate people displaced by the forced removals from other parts of Cape Town, such as District Six, as well as to provide housing for those relocating from overcrowded informal settlements.  Delft is populated mainly by coloured and some black people. Unfortunately, it is plagued by crime, poverty and substandard services.

Unemployment is high, and many people have resorted to their own initiatives. Food-related businesses dominate the local informal economy. These include spaza shops, takeaways and street vendors. Many spaza and house shops sell small, affordable everyday items, while street trading in fresh produce and prepared food serves the immediate community.

Delft is divided into seven parts: Delft South (also known as Suburban), Voorbrug, Leiden (Delft Central), Eindhoven, Roosendal, The Hague and the new Symphony section.
