Doringbaai previously was known by the English version of the name “Thornbay.” It is a fishing village with a focus on crayfish.
In days gone by Doringbaai was used as an anchorage where supplies were kept in transit and then transported to Vanrhynsdorp by camel.
The town was officially established only in 1925.
The old crayfish factory which was closed in the 1970s is now used for abalone farming. On the same site is a wine-tasting facility and restaurant called Fryers Cove Wines. The grapes used for this wine come from a vineyard that is the closest to any coast in the world. the vines grow only 820 metres from the shoreline.
