Doringbaai lighthouse
Before the village of Doringbaai was established, it was used as a safe anchorage by ships. Because there were no roads in this part of the coast, goods were offloaded in the bay and then transported by camel to Vanrhynsdorp and other nearby towns. In 1925, when a crayfish packing factory was built, the area was first settled, mainly by families who came from Saldanha Bay.
The original Doringbaai Lighthouse was an aluminium lattice tower installed in 1963. It was situated 20km south of the Olifants River and was destroyed in a storm in 1991. In 1993 a round concrete 21 metre tall structure with a black and white lantern house was built to replace it. It overlooks the shoulder of Fryer’s Cove. The rocky outcrop on which it is built forms a natural breakwater. This Lighthouse is not manned and is not open to the public.
The 615,000 candelas white light flashes twice every 10 seconds and can be seen for 25 nautical miles.
