In 1983 it was announced by the government that “legal” residents of squatter camps would be accommodated in a new 3220-hectare development which would be called Khayelitsha which is Xhosa for “New Home”.
Khayelitsha grew quickly as a home for migrant workers, particularly after 1994 when influx control was abolished. It began by being populated with overflow inhabitants from Crossroads who mostly were fleeing the violent situation in Crossroads. By 1995 half a million people lived in Khayelitsha
