Grassy Park is a southern suburb of Cape Town located on the Cape Flats, approximately 20 km south-east of the city centre. Grassy Park is bordered by Retreat, Lotus River, Zeekoevlei, and Pelican Park. The area is largely residential, with a mix of established homes, local businesses, schools, and community facilities. Main routes include Prince George Drive (M5), which connects to Muizenberg, the Southern Suburbs, and the N1 and N2 highways.
History of Grassy Park
Grassy Park is a suburb on the Cape Flats, surrounded by lakes and wetlands. The area is home to diverse fauna and flora, with several nature reserves nearby, including Rondevlei Nature Reserve, which provides a peaceful escape for visitors.
The suburb began developing in the early 1900s on part of the Montagu’s Gift estate, north of Zeekoevlei. At that time, the area was rural and administered by the Divisional Council of the Cape. By 1920, the estate had around 2,000 residents.
Education was an early priority. Grassy Park EC Primary School, originally the All Saints Mission School, opened on 13 February 1912 with one teacher and 23 learners. It was one of the only schools on the Cape Flats at the time.
Community services grew steadily. In 1925, the Holy Family Sisters began providing nursing care for residents, later establishing a clinic and chapel between 7th and 8th Avenues in Victoria Road. In 1932, a tuberculosis clinic opened, and by 1937, an antenatal clinic served the community.
A Parent-Teacher Association was formed in 1953, reflecting the suburb’s growing focus on education and civic involvement.
Grassy Park also developed recreational and environmental spaces. The nearby wetlands and nature reserves were historically used for grazing, woodcutting, and flower picking. Today, they provide walking trails, birdwatching, and other outdoor activities for residents and visitors.
