History of Gugulethu

The name Gugulethu comes from “igugu lethu” which means “our pride”in Xhosa. The township was established in the 1960s as a reaction to the overcrowding of Langa which was the only township dedicated for black residents. At the time black people were not allowed to live within the city of Cape Town. Black residents were forcibly removed from townships declared as “coloured” areas

The postal codes for Gugulethu are 7750 (Streets) and 7751 (Boxes)
