Hanover Park was established in 1969 and it started off as smallholdings which were later occupied by many people as a result of the “Group Areas Act”. Coloured families who were moved from Newlands, Claremont and District six were relocated into rental accommodation provided by the council. These residences were mainly two-story and three-story blocks. This disruption is said to have contributed to the destabilization of communities and the increase of gang-based violence. Since then shacks have been built behind the rental units using utilities connected to the existing buildings. Toilet facilities are limited in these areas.
