Manenberg is a residential suburb on the Cape Flats in Cape Town, located near Athlone and Hanover Park. The area is primarily residential and forms part of the City of Cape Town metro.

Manenberg is a residential suburb on the Cape Flats in Cape Town, Western Cape. It lies east of the city centre and forms part of the greater Athlone area. Manenberg is bordered by Athlone, Gugulethu and Hanover Park, with major routes such as Jakes Gerwel Drive (M7) and Duinefontein Road providing access to surrounding suburbs and the N2 highway. The area consists mainly of council-built housing developed during the 1960s and remains a densely populated urban neighbourhood within the City of Cape Town metropolitan municipality.

History of Manenberg

The mother city has experienced housing shortages since about 1835, as a result of the abolition of slavery, coloured and Malay people who had previously lived on their masters’ property needed housing. Several housing projects were undertaken. Post-World War 2, there were almost 3,000 houses in 14 housing estates across Cape Town. By 1972, there were almost 30 000.

These estates were segregated and intended to cater for the resettlement of coloureds who were forcibly removed from areas in the city declared as “white” areas. Manenburg is one of these places
