Ottery

Ottery is a residential and mixed-use suburb on the Cape Flats, known for its railway station, industrial activity, Royal Cape Golf Club and proximity to major Cape Town transport routes.

Ottery

Ottery is a residential and mixed-use suburb on the Cape Flats, approximately 13 km south-east of Cape Town’s city centre. The area lies on flat, low-lying terrain formed by ancient dune systems and marine deposits, with an average elevation of around 18 metres above sea level.

The landscape is characterised by sandy soils and remnants of Cape Flats Sand Fynbos, once dominant in the region. Ottery connects to major arterial routes, including Lansdowne Road and Ottery Road, with quick access to the M5 freeway, linking to both the N1 and N2 highways. Cape Town International Airport is reachable in approximately 20 minutes by road.

History of Ottery

Ottery was established in the early 1900s following the extension of the railway line from Maitland to this area in 1904. Originally a private railway, the line was acquired by the Cape Government in 1908, improving access and encouraging residential development.

The suburb takes its name from an early 20th-century Otter Sanctuary that once operated in the area. The sanctuary closed as the surrounding neighbourhood expanded.

By the 1940s, Ottery had established basic residential patterns. In 1948, the Ottery School of Industries was founded as a correctional and vocational training facility for boys classified as Coloured under apartheid legislation. The institution focused on practical trades such as carpentry, mechanics and agriculture.

During the late 20th century, Ottery developed significant industrial zones, including light manufacturing and engineering operations. Like many working-class suburbs, the area experienced deindustrialisation post-1994, with a gradual shift toward service-based economic activity. Retail expansion followed in later years.

Adjacent land at Youngsfield has also been identified in recent years for affordable housing development as part of broader urban densification plans.

Transport

Ottery is served by the Ottery railway station on the Cape Flats Line, connecting the suburb to central Cape Town and neighbouring areas including Pinelands, Athlone, Lansdowne and Retreat.

Golden Arrow Bus Services operates routes through Ottery, including services between Wynberg and Khayelitsha. MyCiTi routes also operate in surrounding areas such as Wetton and Plumstead, linking into Cape Town’s broader bus network.

The suburb’s road network provides strong regional access via Ottery Road, Lansdowne Road and the M5 Freeway
