Khayelitsha is a large township on the Cape Flats about 30 km southeast of Cape Town. It lies near the N2 highway between Mitchells Plain and Macassar, with False Bay a short distance to the south. Khayelitsha forms part of the Cape Town metropolitan area and is connected to the city by the N2 as well as the suburban rail network.
History of Khayelitsha
In 1983, it was announced by the government that “legal” residents of squatter camps would be accommodated in a new 3220-hectare development, which would be called Khayelitsha, which is Xhosa for “New Home”.
Khayelitsha grew quickly as a home for migrant workers, particularly after 1994 when influx control was abolished. It began by being populated with overflow inhabitants from Crossroads who were mostly fleeing the violent situation in Crossroads.
By 1995, half a million people lived there. was seen as the solution to two problems: the rapidly-growing number of migrants from the Eastern Cape, and overcrowding in other Cape Town townships. Khayelitsha entrepreneurial ventures are a testament to the resilience of human nature. Kayelitsha is also known for some great live music, mostly jazz and blues cafes.
The Khayelitsha Wetlands Park was established in 1998, following a study that identified viable land-use zones across the greater wetlands area. What was once a filthy, litter-strewn bog has been rehabilitated into a landscape that is environmentally friendly and attractive
