The Overberg is a region in the Western Cape located east of Cape Town and bordered by the Atlantic and Indian Oceans along much of its southern coastline. The region includes farming valleys, mountain ranges, coastal towns and nature reserves, with agriculture, fishing and tourism forming the core of the local economy. The Overberg is known for wheat fields, vineyards, fynbos landscapes and coastal destinations such as Hermanus, as well as the southernmost point of Africa at Cape Agulhas.

Swellendam Local Municipality

The Swellendam Local Municipality covers 3 835 km² and forms part of the Overberg District in the Western Cape, and covers the largest geographical area within the district. The municipality has a strong agricultural base, producing wheat, barley, deciduous fruit, grapes, and livestock, while agro-processing and small manufacturing also contribute to the local economy. Tourism plays an important role, supported by natural and heritage attractions such as Bontebok National Park, Marloth Nature Reserve, and Sanbona Wildlife Reserve.

L’Agulhas Local Municipality

The L’Agulhas Local Municipality covers an area of 3 470 km² and lies at the southern tip of Africa in the Overberg District. The economy includes agriculture, fishing, tourism, construction, and services. Overstrand Local Municipality

The Overstrand Local Municipality covers an area of 1,675 km² that stretches along a large section of coastline in the Overberg District, with Hermanus serving as the municipal seat. The area is internationally known for land-based whale watching, marine tourism, beaches, and nature reserves. Tourism, hospitality, and the wine industry are key contributors to the local economy, together with fishing and small businesses in coastal towns.

Theewaterskloof Local Municipality

The Theewaterskloof Local Municipality covers 3 261 km² and forms the inland gateway to the Overberg from Cape Town. The municipality is centred around agriculture, with extensive fruit farming, vineyards, and crop production. Natural features such as Theewaterskloof Dam and the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve support tourism, outdoor activities, and conservation. Local towns also provide agricultural processing, services, and tourism infrastructure.
