Towns in the Cape Winelands District

The Cape Winelands District in the Western Cape covers an area of 21 478 km² and includes five local municipalities: Breede Valley, Drakenstein, Langeberg, Stellenbosch and Witzenberg. The district lies inland from Cape Town and includes well-known towns such as Paarl, Stellenbosch, Worcester, Robertson and Ceres. Agriculture, particularly wine and fruit farming, plays an important role in the region’s economy. Formerly known as the Boland District Municipality, it lies between the West Coast and Overberg districts.

Breede Valley Local Municipality

The Breede River Valley municipality, with an area of 3 834 km², borders Witzenberg to the north, Langeberg to the south, the Central Karoo District to the east, with Drakenstein and Stellenbosch to the west. The municipal area includes fertile valleys, mountain ranges and agricultural land along the Breede River. It includes the towns of De Doorns, Rawsonville, Touws River, and Worcester

Drakenstein Local Municipality

The Drakenstein Local Municipality covers an area of 1 537 km² and borders the City of Cape Town Metropolitan Municipality and the West Coast District to the west. The municipality extends from areas south of the N1 freeway in the south to Saron in the north. The Klein Drakenstein, Limiet and Saron mountain ranges form its eastern boundary. Paarl and Wellington are the main urban centres. Towns in this municipality include  Gouda, Hermon, Mbekweni, Paarl, Saron, Simondium, Wellington

Langeberg Local Municipality

The Langeberg Local Municipality within the Cape Winelands District covers an area of 4,518 km² in the Western Cape Province. It borders the Breede Valley to the north and west and the Overberg District to the south and east. It is one of five municipalities in the district. The municipal area includes agricultural valleys and mountain landscapes along the Breede River and includes the towns of  Ashton, Bonnievale, McGregor, Montagu, and Robertson

Stellenbosch Local Municipality

The Stellenbosch Local Municipality covers an area of 836 km²in the Western Cape Province. It is the smallest municipality in the district by area. The municipal area lies east of Cape Town and is widely used for agriculture, particularly vineyards and wine production. Stellenbosch town is one of the oldest settlements in South Africa. Towns in this municipality include Franschhoek, Klapmuts, Pniel, and Stellenbosch.

Witzenberg Local Municipality

The Witzenberg Local Municipality covers 10 753 km² within the Cape Winelands District in the Western Cape Province. It is located north-east of Cape Town and is the largest municipality in the district. The area is surrounded by mountain ranges, including the Obiqua Mountains, Winterhoek Mountains and the Witzenberg Range. Agricultural areas include the Warm Bokkeveld and Koue Bokkeveld. Towns in this municipality include Ceres, Tulbagh, Wolseley, Op-die-Berg and Prince Alfred’s Hamlet.
