Kraaifontein was established when farmland was subdivided in the area in 1869. Kraai is crow in Afrikaans. A railway station was built on the line that passed through Kraaifontein and it was called Kraaifontein Junction in 1876. By 1877 formal development of the town had begun.
The first school was built in Kraaifontein in 1908. Kraaifontein became a municipality in 1957 with JP Rossouw as the first mayor.
