Kraaifontein is a suburb in the Northern Suburbs of Cape Town in the Western Cape, South Africa. It lies inland east of Brackenfell and north of Durbanville, near the N1 highway and the Cape Gate area. The suburb forms part of the greater Cape Town metropolitan area and provides access to surrounding residential areas such as Peerless Park, Scottsville and Windsor Park, as well as newer developments toward Uitzicht and Langeberg.
History of Kraaifontein
Kraaifontein developed after farmland in the area was subdivided in 1869. The name comes from Afrikaans: kraai, which is a crow and fontein, fountain or spring. A railway station was built on the line passing through the area in 1876 and named Kraaifontein Junction. Formal development followed soon afterwards, and by 1877, a small settlement had formed.
The first school opened in 1908. Kraaifontein later became a municipality in 1957, with J.P. Rossouw serving as the first mayor.
Today, the area includes suburbs such as Windsor Park, Scottsville, Peerless Park, Eikendal, Scottsdene, Bloekombos, Wallacedene, Belmont Park, Bonny Brook, Uitzicht, Bonnie Brae, Kleinbron and Langeberg. What began as farmland and a railway stop has developed into a large residential area within metropolitan Cape Town, with schools, shopping facilities and access to major transport routes.
