Klein Brak River (Klein Brakrivier) is a coastal settlement on the Garden Route, located about 15 km northeast of Mossel Bay, and 30 km southwest of George. The town lies at the mouth of the Klein Brak River where it meets the Indian Ocean. It sits along the N2 national route and forms part of the Mossel Bay Local Municipality. The area is characterised by coastal dunes, estuary wetlands, and nearby seaside suburbs such as Reebok and Tergniet.
History of Klein Brak Rivier
Little Brak River, in English: Klein-Brak Rivier in Afrikaans, is a seaside resort and town at the mouth of the Klein Brak Rivier. The first recorded reference to the area was in 1730.
The river is navigable for about 20 km, and fish are abundant. Little Brak Lagoon is ideal for canoeing and is popular for all sorts of water sports. There are excellent fishing spots on the river and along the 4 km-long beach. The outlying areas of Reebok and Tergniet are known for their excellent land-based whale and dolphin-watching opportunities. Klein Brak Rivier is now within a bird sanctuary, and the birds are spectacular.
1907 saw the opening of a railway station in the town.
