Tygerberg

Tygerberg is a range of hills in northern Cape Town, known for historic farms, scenic vineyards, and the Tygerberg Nature Reserve. Its cool coastal climate and rich heritage make it a unique part of the Cape Town region.

Tygerberg is an area in the northern suburbs of Cape Town, within the Western Cape. It lies north-east of the city centre and forms part of the broader Bellville area. Tygerberg sits on elevated ground overlooking the Cape Flats and is bordered by suburbs such as Parow and Goodwood. The area is well connected via major routes including the N1 and Voortrekker Road, and is best known for the Tygerberg Hospital precinct.

History of Tygerberg

Tygerberg – From Farmland to Wine Hills

Tygerberg is a range of hills on the northern outskirts of Cape Town. The main farms that originally made up the area included Pampoenkraal, Stellenberg, Evertsdal, de Grendel, and Clara Anna Fontein, while Vissershoek later became a quarry. Clara Anna Fontein, originally known as Uitkamp, was awarded to Hendrik Olivier in 1652 and was among the first farms allocated to settlers. Over the years, these farms supported cattle, sheep, and vineyards. Much of this farmland has since been sold for residential development, and the Tygerberg Nature Reserve preserves a portion of the original landscape.

Now part of the greater Cape Town area, Tygerberg is a distinctive former wine region in the northern suburbs. With a relatively cool climate and proximity to the ocean, it became known for its bright, flinty Sauvignon Blanc wines. While its official wine district status was repealed in 2017 with the creation of the new Cape Town wine district, vineyards still thrive in the valleys and on the slopes of the hills, benefiting from diverse microclimates.

The Tygerberg hills stretch north from Cape Town to the town of Philadelphia, just short of the Swartland, and are roughly 12 km from the Atlantic Ocean and 25 km from False Bay. The coastal influence is strong: south-easterly breezes from False Bay funnel up the hills in the afternoons, cooling the vines after hot morning sun.

The area takes its name from the distinctive mounds dotting the countryside, which early settlers thought resembled the spots of a leopard. Mistaking the big cats that once roamed here, they named the hills Tygerberg, “Tiger Mountain.” Wine production in the region dates back to 1702, shortly after the nearby town of Durbanville was established, making it one of the historic wine-producing areas in the Western Cape.
