History of Kranshoek

Kranshoek has a layered history closely linked to the Khoisan, the original inhabitants of the region, and later to the Griqua people who settled here. Today, it is a small coastal village along the Garden Route, known for its dramatic cliffs, ocean views, and strong cultural identity.

The modern settlement was established in the early 1900s by Griqua trekkers led by Abraham le Fleur. Displaced from land near Kokstad, Le Fleur guided his followers in search of a permanent home. He founded the Griqua National Conference in 1904 and the Griqua Independent Church, becoming a central spiritual and political figure among his people. His grave remains in Kranshoek, and a monument erected in 1942 commemorates the Griqua pioneers.

Le Fleur, known to his followers as “the Reformer” and “die Kneg” (servant of God), believed he had received a divine calling in 1889 at Mount Mynjanie near Kokstad. He was instructed to lead his people to what is now Kranshoek. According to oral tradition, he prophesied that the area would provide abundance, with plentiful fish and fertile land. The nearby farm, Jakkalskraal, was described as the “breadbasket” of the Griqua in times of need.

In 1927, many Griqua followed Le Fleur to the area from across South Africa, including from settlements around Cape Town and Stellenbosch. Initially, the group lacked the funds to purchase land and instead leased the farm Jakkalskraal. It was only in 1957 that they were able to buy the land and establish a more permanent settlement.

During the apartheid era, the village was further shaped by government resettlement policies. People classified as non-white, many of them descendants of Khoisan and other marginalised communities, were forcibly moved to areas like Kranshoek. Despite these challenges, the community grew steadily, developing into the village seen today.

The Griqua also fought for formal recognition as a distinct group, and through the efforts of leaders such as Andrew Le Fleur, they were recognised as a separate racial category in South African identity documents.

Kranshoek remains culturally significant. Traditions such as the riel dance continue to be practised. The riel, one of the oldest indigenous dance forms in South Africa, originated among the San, Khoi, and Nama peoples. It is an energetic, rhythmic dance involving fast footwork and expressive movement, and it remains an important part of local heritage
