University Estate is a residential suburb on the slopes of Devil’s Peak, on the edge of Table Mountain National Park. It lies just west of the original District Six and above Woodstock, with quick access to the Cape Town CBD via De Waal Drive.
The suburb is known for its central location, with convenient routes to the city centre, University of Cape Town, Groote Schuur Hospital, major highways, and the airport. Many homes enjoy mountain or harbour views, and residents have easy access to walking and hiking trails on Devil’s Peak.
Open green spaces in and around the suburb are used for walking and recreation, including the park and sports field near the intersection of Rhodes Avenue and Haig Road, often referred to locally as “the quarry”.
Pedestrian access to Devil’s Peak is possible via routes linking to De Waal Drive, while bridges and roads connect the suburb to Woodstock and Salt River below.
History of University Estate
Under the Apartheid-era Group Areas Act, University Estate was classified as a whites-only suburb. Following the repeal of this legislation in the early 1990s, the area gradually became more integrated and is now a diverse residential neighbourhood.
Primarily residential, University Estate features older homes on relatively large plots compared to other City Bowl areas. As part of greater Cape Town’s urban heritage zone, architectural character remains an important feature, and several historic-style buildings have been renovated over time.
There are a few commercial properties within University Estate itself. Limited activity includes small guest lodges and low-impact home-based businesses, with most shopping and services found in nearby Woodstock, Salt River, Gardens and the City Bowl.
The postcode for University Estate is 7925
