The suburb is located in the northern suburbs of Cape Town, between Plattekloof, Bothasig, and Milnerton, and lies close to major transport routes, including the N7 and Plattekloof Road. Its position places it within easy reach of the Cape Town CBD, Century City, and the Blaauwberg coastal corridor.

Set on gently undulating former farmland, the area offers wide views across vineyards towards Table Mountain and the Tygerberg hills. Despite its urban character, it retains a semi-rural feel due to its proximity to De Grendel Wine Estate and surrounding agricultural land.

History of Burgundy Estate

Burgundy Estate is a relatively recent residential development on land that was formerly part of De Grendel Farm, a historic property that has been associated with the Graaff family for several generations. De Grendel dates back to the early 18th century and is one of the older farms in the Cape.

The farm is now best known for its vineyards and wine production, but earlier farming was more diverse. Under Sir David Graaff, De Grendel was used for grazing Friesland cattle and for breeding Arabian horses. The open land and gentle slopes provided suitable conditions for livestock farming and horse breeding before vineyards became an important part of the estate.

As Cape Town expanded northwards, portions of the former farm were developed for residential use. Burgundy Estate was planned as a high-density residential development, with landscaped open spaces, security and a mixture of housing, shops and other services. The development has retained areas of open land and views towards Table Mountain and the surrounding countryside.

One of the more unusual features of Burgundy Estate is the Burgundy Sports Club, which includes a 9-hole mashie golf course and a large pond used for kayaking. The pond also forms part of the estate’s stormwater management system, collecting rainwater during periods of heavy rainfall.

The estate also has a dedicated dog park where residents can exercise their dogs. These recreational facilities form part of the planned open spaces within the development.
