Development after roads are built

Montagu in the Western Little Karoo lies between the Keisie and Kingna rivers. It was previously known as Agter Cogman’s Kloof. The settlement was established on the farm Uitvlugt(escape) in1851. It was named after John Montagu, British secretary of the Cape Colony from 1843 to 1853. He realized that the colony would never develop without efficient passable roads and transport. He was assisted by pioneering engineers who built passes over the mountains. The town was named after him in 1851. It received municipal status in 1895.

Healing hot springs

Montagu is known for its hot springs and its beautiful scenery. It is not known when the springs were first discovered but the indigenous people certainly knew of them. The settlers who discovered them drank the clear strangely flavoured water finding it refreshing and healing. News of the spring spread quickly and soon visitors flocked to the springs which now form the Montagu baths.
Montagu is predominantly an agricultural area where there are vineyards and fruit farms. There are many heritage buildings in Montagu and the museum displays many items of antique stinkwood and yellowwood furniture.
