Heathfield is a suburb in the southern suburbs of Cape Town. It lies on the Cape Flats between Retreat and Grassy Park, close to the Princess Vlei wetland area. The suburb is bordered by Prince George Drive (M5), a major route linking the southern suburbs with Muizenberg and the False Bay coast. Heathfield is primarily residential, with small local shopping areas and schools serving the surrounding communities.
History of Heathfield
The area developed primarily during the mid-20th century as part of the broader expansion of Cape Town’s suburbs. It began as a semi-rural area with large plots of land and farms, but gradually transformed into a suburban neighbourhood. The suburb has a mix of older homes and newer developments, offering a range of housing options. Community initiatives and local organisations continue to work towards preserving its heritage.
Much of the surrounding land was originally low-lying wetlands connected to the Princess Vlei and Diep River system. The opening of the Cape Town–Simon’s Town railway line in the late 19th century encouraged settlement in the area, and Heathfield railway station opened in 1913. It later became an important commuter stop for residents travelling to Cape Town on the interchange of the line to Ottery. See Metro rail
