Crossroads

Crossroads is an informal settlement and township area on the Cape Flats in Cape Town. It lies near Nyanga, Philippi, and the N2 highway and is one of the best-known communities formed during the apartheid era housing shortages.

Crossroads

Crossroads is situated on the Cape Flats, southeast of central Cape Town, close to Nyanga, Browns Farm, and Philippi. The settlement developed alongside the N2 highway, one of the main routes connecting Cape Town to the airport and Somerset West. The area is part of the wider Nyanga region and falls within the City of Cape Town metropolitan municipality.

History of crossroads

This area was first settled in the 1970s. Workers at a farm in the area were told to leave the premises and go and settle at the “Crossroads” They built shanty homes and established a community. By 1977 crossroads was home to 18000 people. Here, people who previously lived in overcrowded hostels in Gugulethu moved to the area and built individual homes, but the government considered the settlement to be temporary. Orders to move and dismantle the shacks were given in 1975. However, these orders were opposed and ignored, and by 1978, the government was compelled to recognise the area, and rudimentary water supplies and refuse removal services were supplied.

The postcode for Crossroads is 7750
