Atlantis is a town on the West Coast of the Western Cape, South Africa, situated about 50 km north of central Cape Town. It lies inland from the coastal settlements of Duynefontein and Melkbosstrand and is accessed mainly via the R27 (West Coast Road) and the R307. The town was originally developed as an industrial area with nearby residential zones for workers. Atlantis is known for its industrial estates, local businesses, and outdoor recreational spaces, including the white dunes popular for sandboarding and quad biking.
The Atlantis Dunes and the Witzands Aquifer Nature Reserve are two of the city’s most important natural habitats. The aquifer is a vital source of water for the area. The dunes were formed over millions of years, as sand was blown inland from the nearby coast. Today, they support a variety of plant and animal life, including several rare and endangered species. Before 1973, this area was characterised by dunes and not much else.
History Of Atlantis
Atlantis is about 40 km from Cape Town. It was established in the 1970s as an industrial area. The residential section was built to encourage labour to move into the area to work in the industries. Incentives were put in place for industry to set up here, but when the incentives were removed, many of the factories moved away. Currently, only about 3% of the original companies still have businesses here, but many new factories and businesses have started to operate again. Local art galleries and community theatres showcase local artists. Several annual festivals celebrate the diverse heritage of Atlantis, these include traditional music and dance events.
