Table View is a coastal suburb on the West Coast side of Cape Town, about 15 km north of the city centre. It lies between Milnerton and Bloubergstrand, facing Table Bay with direct views of Table Mountain across the water. The suburb is easily reached via the R27 (West Coast Road) and forms part of the greater Blaauwberg area, a popular residential and holiday region known for its long beaches, water sports and access to the Blaauwberg Nature Reserve.

History of Tableview

Spectacular Views of Table Mountain

Table View, named for its iconic view of Table Mountain, lies north of Cape Town beyond the Rietvlei wetlands and lagoon. The area is known for its strong connection to the outdoors, with abundant birdlife and excellent conditions for water sports. Rietvlei forms part of the Table Bay Nature Reserve and offers opportunities for canoeing, sailing, and water skiing, while bird enthusiasts can spot pelicans, flamingos, and a variety of other waterbirds in the wetlands.

The area also has historical roots linked to early travel routes. In the early 20th century, the Koeberg Road from Maitland past Killarney towards the Swartland was known as the “hard road,” compared to the sandy dune tracks. Along this route to Saldanha Bay were several outspans, including the Potsdam Outspan at the intersection of Koeberg and Blaauwberg Roads. This was an overnight stop for farmers travelling to Cape Town, and the surrounding area was simply known as Outspan during the 1920s and 1930s.

Table View’s coastline includes Bloubergstrand, Big Bay, Little Bay, and Dolphin Beach. Big Bay is well known for surfing, windsurfing, and paddle skiing competitions, while Little Bay is popular with families and sunbathers. Swimming is considered safer in designated areas near lifesaving clubs. The long beachfront along the seafront road has ample parking and is popular for walks and jogging, with colourful kites often filling the sky on windy days. With its beaches, nature reserve, and easy access to Cape Town, Table View remains a favourite for families, outdoor enthusiasts, and visitors alike.
