Pearly Beach village is a small coastal settlement in the Overstrand region of the Western Cape, about 22 km east of Gansbaai and roughly 200 km southeast of Cape Town. It lies along the R43 coastal route near Uilkraal and Baardskeerdersbos, between the fynbos hills and a long stretch of sandy shoreline facing the Atlantic Ocean. Access is via the R43 from Stanford and Gansbaai, followed by a local road into the village.

History of Pearly Beach Village

Pearly Beach Village has been a family holiday destination since the 1920s, when visitors first camped and fished along this stretch of coast on what was once part of the Kleinhagelkraal cattle farm. The village name comes from the many pearly shells that regularly wash ashore, and beachcombing remains a favourite activity today. The shoreline is a long, uninterrupted strip of pale sand, which explains why it is often called the “pearl of all beaches”.

From July to September, Southern Right whales are commonly seen close to shore, sometimes clearly visible from the beach itself. Local tradition says that frequent breaching often signals approaching rough weather. Read about whales and dolphins here

Before tourism, the area was mainly agricultural. Farms in the surrounding region supported dairy and small-scale livestock operations during the 1800s. Over time, holiday cottages replaced seasonal camps, and Pearly Beach gradually developed into a quiet coastal settlement rather than a farming outpost.

The village lies within an ecologically important section of the Overstrand coast. Nearby Walker Bay and the Pearly Beach Nature Reserve protect limestone fynbos and coastal vegetation, with several plant species found only in this small soil belt. The reserve also supports a variety of birdlife. Fishing remains part of daily life in the village. Anglers fish from the beach for species such as kob and other seasonal catches, while the open coastline attracts both casual visitors and regular fishermen who return each year.

Today, Pearly Beach village is known less as a resort and more as a peaceful seaside village, with simple facilities, wide beaches, whale watching in season, and easy access to Gansbaai and the surrounding Overstrand towns.
