Mouille Point

Mouille Point is a coastal suburb of Cape Town in the Western Cape of South Africa. It is known for its seaside promenade, Mouille Point Lighthouse, and scenic views of Table Bay.

Mouille Point is a coastal suburb located on the Atlantic Ocean shoreline of Cape Town. It lies just northwest of the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront and east of Sea Point.

The area is known for its paved promenade along the sea, the Mouille Point lighthouse and scenic views of Table Bay. Mouille Point is popular with walkers, joggers, and cyclists, and its coastal location connects it directly to Cape Town’s urban and recreational spaces.

History of Mouille Point

The name Mouille is French for anchoring ground. Many ships ran aground here in the early 1700s, and the then-governor decided that a Mouille (breakwater) would help protect ships at anchor. The task began in 1743 when farmers, having delivered goods to the city, had to load up their wagons with stones and haul them off to Mouille Point. Slaves and prisoners worked on the project, but after 3 years of labouring, only 100 metres had been completed, and the project was abandoned due to the high seas making it untenable. The French arrived in 1781, and they built a battery near the unsuccessful Mouille, but still called this Mouille Point Battery.

A small suburb indeed

The suburb consists of only two roads and a lighthouse. The current lighthouse, however, is called Green Point Lighthouse, as there was a second lighthouse at Granger Bay that has been partially dismantled.

The postcode here is 8005
