Masiphumelele, near Kommetjie, Western Cape, is a growing township whose name means “let us succeed” in Xhosa. Settled in the 1980s, it now has thousands of residents living in informal and brick housing.

Masiphumelele is a township near Kommetjie in the Western Cape, about 30 km southwest of Cape Town. 

History of Masiphumelele

Masiphumelele, close to Kommetjie is the name given to this township by its residents, it means “let us succeed” in Xhosa. It was originally called Site 5. In the 80s, about 500 people who moved from Khayelitsha, about 30 kilometres away, settled there. When apartheid fell, the area grew to have thousands of residents living mostly in shacks. By 2010 approximately 38000 people were living in Masipumelele, some had built brick homes. Many of the residents are from the Eastern Cape. The infrastructure has been slow to follow the growth, with an overcrowded school and understaffed clinic, life is hard in Masiphumelele.
