Lakeside is located in the southern suburbs of Cape Town in the Western Cape. The suburb lies alongside Zandvlei, a coastal wetland connected to False Bay, and is situated near neighbouring suburbs such as Muizenberg, Steenberg, and Westlake.
History of Lakeside and Zandvlei
The Lakeside and Zandvlei wetland, which links to the Zandvlei estuary, is surrounded by mostly residential urban development. The total catchment area for Zandvleiis 92 square kilometres, but the original wetland area has been much reduced. The development, which began with the arrival of the Dutch East India Company, has unfortunately had negative impacts on the area. As far back as 1673, a cattle post was established at the edge of the vlei. A railway bridge was constructed in 1882. Furthermore, dredging of the area has damaged or obliterated much of the wetland.
