Imizamo Yethu is located on the eastern slopes of Hout Bay in Cape Town, above the harbour and between the main town and the mountains of the Cape Peninsula. It sits along Valley Road near Hangberg, with access from Victoria Road (M6) and the routes linking Hout Bay to Constantia and the Atlantic Seaboard. The area forms part of greater Hout Bay and lies within easy reach of local schools, transport routes and employment areas in the valley.
History of Imizamo Yethu
Imizamo Yethu, which means through collective struggle’, a largely informal township is situated alongside the picturesque and relatively wealthy suburb of Hout Bay.
The majority of residents are Black Xhosa speakers from the Eastern Cape. Some Coloured people are from the traditional Squatter Communities. There are also some informal settlement dwellers from other parts of Africa, such as Angola and Zaire, living in the buffer zone of the area. These people probably entered the country illegally, having docked in Hout Bay in Fishing Trawlers.
Ex-forestry land was first made available in 1990 to settle squatters from the Hout Bay area who wanted legal property rights. Originally, the site was regarded as a transit area while a formal area was being laid out. Surveying began in 1993
The postcode for Imizamo Yethu is 7806
