Hotagterklip is a small coastal settlement in the Overberg region of the Western Cape, about 10 km west of Struisbaai. and east of Arniston (Waenhuiskrans). It lies just off the R319 along the Agulhas coastal plain and forms part of the Cape Agulhas municipal area. The settlement consists mainly of holiday cottages and fishing properties, with access to rocky shoreline, tidal pools and nearby beaches along the southernmost coastline of Africa.

History of Hotagterklip

. The name “Hotagterklip” is derived from the Afrikaans phrase “Hottentot after die klip,” which roughly translates to “Hottentot behind the rock,” referencing the Khoisan people who once inhabited the area and the large rock formations nearby.

Hotagterklip is known for its well-preserved traditional fishermen’s cottages, which were restored in the 1990s and are declared national monuments. They are characteristic of the architecture in this part of the Western Cape. These whitewashed, thatch-roofed cottages date back to the 19th century. They reflect the village’s cultural and historical significance. Some of the cottages are used as holiday homes. They offer a glimpse into the lifestyle of the early settlers who relied on fishing as their primary means of livelihood.

The village is located near the Agulhas Plain, an area known for its rich biodiversity and proximity to the southernmost tip of Africa, Cape Agulhas. This region has a long history of maritime activity, with the nearby coastline being notorious for shipwrecks due to treacherous waters.

The UNESCO Cape Floral Region protected area is nearby.
