Angling in the Western Cape offers a wide range of experiences, from deep-sea and shore fishing along the coast to freshwater fishing in rivers, dams, and mountain reservoirs. This page brings together the main fishing types, key guides, rules, and resources in one place. Use it as a starting point to explore detailed pages on species, locations, and techniques across the region.

Types of Fishing in the Western Cape

Spear Fishing

Spearfishing in the Western Cape offers everything from kelp forest diving around Cape Town to offshore reefs and warmer southern waters. Popular areas include Rooi-Els, Dassen Island, Cape Point, Mossel Bay, and Struisbaai, where divers target species such as hottentot, red roman, yellowtail, snoek, and butterfish. Conditions vary greatly depending on currents, visibility, swell, and shark activity, so local knowledge and careful planning are important, especially in more exposed areas.

Main Ocean Angling Areas

False Bay

False Bay is one of the Western Cape’s best seasonal fishing destinations, with productive fishing throughout the year. Summer, from October to April, brings warm currents driven by the south-easterly “Cape Doctor”, attracting species such as yellowtail, yellowfin tuna, kob, geelbek, and chokka (squid). In winter, cooler waters favour snoek and other cold-water species. Successful anglers watch the wind, tides, bait movement, and weather patterns closely, as fish often follow seasonal currents and feeding activity around the bay. Popular fishing areas include Kalk Bay, Fish Hoek, Gordon’s Bay, and the waters around Cape Point. Key fishing areas around False Bay are covered in the dedicated fishing locations guide.

West Coast

The West Coast of the Western Cape is one of South Africa’s most productive fishing regions, offering beaches, rocky bays, estuaries, river mouths, piers, and harbours. Saldanha Bay is the largest natural bay in South Africa and a major fishing hub, with catches including kob, galjoen, hottentot, shad, garrick, as well as sharks and rays in summer.

Langebaan Lagoon is known for calm estuary fishing and saltwater fly fishing, with species such as guitarfish and sand sharks on the flats. Jacobsbaai offers productive rock and beach fishing, while Yzerfontein is known for snoek, galjoen, hottentot, and crayfish, depending on the season.

Southern Coast

The South Coast of the Western Cape, including the Overberg and Garden Route, offers diverse fishing conditions where Atlantic and Indian Ocean influences meet. Areas such as Hermanus, Gansbaai, Struisbaai, Mossel Bay, and the wider Garden Route provide rock, surf, estuary, and boat fishing. Common species include kob, steenbras, geelbek, galjoen, elf, and seasonal pelagic fish such as snoek and tuna, with estuaries supporting grunter, leervis, and mullet depending on season and conditions.
