It falls within the Matzikama Local Municipality and sits along the Atlantic shoreline near the mouth of the Verlorenvlei. The area forms part of the broader West Coast and is surrounded by farmland, wetlands, and coastal dunes.
History of Elands Bay
Elands Bay is a town on the Atlantic Ocean. It is famous for caves with some great examples of rock paintings, some dating back 10,000 years.
The Bobbejaan mountain cliffs form a large rock shelter that is adorned by primitive San paintings. The Cave has been declared a provincial heritage site. The coastline is an important bird sanctuary, and the wetland there, Verlorenvlei, is a Ramsar wetland.
Close by is the hamlet Verlorenvlei, where there are remnants of farm buildings dating back to the beginning of the 18th century. There is an old horse-operated flour mill. Also, some langhuisies in the traditional Cape cottage style with bo-en-onder doors, dung floors, stone stoeps and windows with solid shutters and end gables with projecting chimney stacks.
