Development began on Century city in 1997. 250 hectares were set aside for a mixed-use development.
This includes offices, retail space, entertainment areas and residential blocks. The area is traversed by canals and waterways set in a natural wetland. Part of the wetland, Intaka Island has been preserved as a bird sanctuary which is open to the public.
The retail development Canal walk which opened in 2000 is one of the largest in South Africa.
