Century City

Century City is a planned suburb north-east of Cape Town’s CBD, positioned along the N1 and centred around waterways and the Canal Walk retail complex

Century city

Century City is a mixed-use suburb located approximately 10 km north-east of Cape Town’s city centre. It lies between Milnerton and Montague Gardens, just inland from the Atlantic coastline. The suburb is built around the rehabilitated wetlands and waterways of the Diep River system and includes residential estates, commercial offices and retail developments. Canal Walk forms the central retail hub of the area.

Century City sits adjacent to the N1 highway, providing direct road access to Cape Town CBD, the northern suburbs and Paarl. It is also positioned near the R27 (West Coast Road), linking the area to Table View and the West Coast.

History of Century City

Development began in this suburb in 1997. 250 hectares were set aside for mixed-use. Construction began in 1997, and the development quickly became known for its unique architectural style and design. One of its central features is the Canal Walk shopping centre, which opened in 2000 and is one of the largest shopping malls in Africa. The development also includes various office parks, residential complexes, hotels, and entertainment options.

The “city” is built around a series of canals and wetlands, providing a scenic and environmentally friendly setting. Part of the wetland, Intaka Island, has been preserved as a bird sanctuary which is open to the public. The area has grown rapidly over the past few decades and has become a prominent business and residential hub in Cape Town, known for its modern infrastructure and convenient location.
