History of Brenton on Sea

Brenton on Sea is a popular holiday area, named after Sir Jaheel Brenton, who declared Knysna as a harbour in 1818.

Admiral Sir Jahleel Brenton served at Simon’s Town from 1815 to 1821. He was an American who rose to flag rank in the British Navy. He mapped the coast from Cape Point to Algoa Bay and was one of the first to navigate a ship through the Knysna Heads.

This area is the last breeding colony of the endangered Brenton blue butterfly. This is the reason the area has remained largely undeveloped. The area has been declared a Special Nature Reserve to protect this species.
