Paarden Eiland used to be a big sand bar which was an island during the wet winter months where there was just a single point of entry to the rest of the peninsula. The river broke through the sandbar close to where Duncan dock is today. It would have been a large estuary which was an important natural resource for grazing and fishing. The area was drained in the early 20th century to make way for the Culemborg shunting yards.
