Ocean View

Ocean View is a residential suburb on the Cape Peninsula between Kommetjie and Scarborough. It developed as a relocation area and today forms part of Cape Town’s South Peninsula communities near Long Beach.

History of Ocean View

This suburb was first established in 1968 for coloured people who had been removed from “white areas” like Simon’s Town, Noordhoek, Red Hill, and Glencairn. This was justified by the Group Areas Act of the apartheid government. Previously named Slangkop, it was built on farmland and fynbos areas. The first resident moved into Ocean View on 1 August 1968. Since the government had removed the residents from their previous seaside homes, there is still much bitter resentment among many people. The community is made up of mixed races with echoes of Khoisan and other settler groups. There is an interesting melting pot of cultures and a vibrant and resilient atmosphere.  a rich cultural life, with many local initiatives focused on arts, music, and community development. The population is mostly dependent on local industries and fishing.
