Monte Vista is a residential suburb in Cape Town, located inland from the Atlantic Ocean coastline. The suburb is situated near Plattekloof and Goodwood, offering residents scenic views of Table Mountain. Monte Vista is primarily residential, featuring quiet streets, local schools, and community amenities.
History of Monte Vista
The name Monte Vista means “Mountain View” and reflects the suburb’s position with views towards Table Mountain. Monte Vista was developed in the early 1960s as Cape Town expanded northwards after the Second World War. It was planned as a residential suburb, with detached houses, gardens and open spaces forming the basic layout.
The new community developed alongside the surrounding suburbs of the northern Cape Flats. Monte Vista Primary School opened in January 1963, providing an early school for the growing population.
As the suburb developed, trees and gardens became an increasingly important part of its appearance. The open spaces and residential plots were gradually transformed from the largely undeveloped landscape that existed before construction into the established suburban environment seen today.
A railway connection was added later. The Kensington–Bellville railway line via Monte Vista opened in 1980, providing the suburb with a connection to Cape Town’s suburban rail network. The railway runs along the edge of Monte Vista and forms part of the boundary between the suburb and neighbouring areas.
Monte Vista has remained primarily residential, with schools, churches, parks, businesses and community facilities serving the surrounding neighbourhood. Its name, meaning “Mountain View”, remains appropriate, as Table Mountain is visible from parts of the suburb.
