Caledon Wildflower Nature Reserve
This wildflower garden was originally called Victoria Park which was established in 1899 on land granted by Queen Victoria. It was founded however in 1927 by some local enthusiasts. It was formally laid out in 1933 by landscaper Cecil Young. This reserve is at the edge of the Kloof, named for the window-shaped rock formation. Venster is window in Afrikaans. At the right time of year, you walk through fields of daisies. There is a network of paths on the aloe-covered rocky mountain. The walks follow quaint pathways with wooden bridges and beautiful picnic areas. There is a fairly extensive network of hiking trails, including a 10km hike to the Swartberg summit at 1,080 metres.
There is also a dam near the entrance to the reserve. The annual wildflower show is held in September when the flowers bloom. The display is spectacular and hikes through the nature reserve are truly worthwhile. The garden also includes a bird sanctuary.Volunteers maintain the garden.
The Caledon Wildflower Garden and Nature Reserve is filled with history, unique plant species and, special memories.
