Freimersheim

Freimersheim is a small village in the Overberg region of the Western Cape, about 15 km north of Bredasdorp and 10 km south of Napier. It lies along local roads connecting the farming areas of the Overberg, surrounded by vineyards and agricultural land. The village forms part of the Cape Agulhas municipal area and provides access to nearby towns, local schools, and regional transport routes.

History of Friemersheim

Freimersheim was founded in the early 19th century by a German missionary, Reverend Johann Kretzen of the Berliner Missionary Society. He petitioned for a church and school to be built on the farm Gonnakraal, which was owned by his sister. When she died in 1872 he bequeathed the farm to the DRC missionary society, later to be called Freimersheim, which was the town in Germany where Kretzen was born. The area was owned by the Dutch reformed church until the 1960s, when the state purchased it.

  • The Fragrance Route. This circular tar/gravel road of about 40 km can be reached from Great Brak River, Little Brak River, Reebok/Tergniet (follow Sorgfontein Road past Leani Kwekery) and Leeukloof. It is very popular amongst local cyclists. The scenic back roads with vistas of fynbos-covered countryside and majestic mountains make this area ideal for mountain biking, off-road biking, and birding.
