Victoria Bay used to be called Gunter bay, It was changed after a meeting held in George with regard to its capability to be used as a port. The bay was surveyed in 1858.
The jetty and tidal pool have an interesting story. A Mr Bramwell from Oudtshoorn won a sweepstake in 1923 with a payout of 125 000 pounds which was a huge sum of money in those days.
He decided to invest in Victoria Bay by buying property and he went ahead building the jetty and the tidal pool which are still there today.
Railway line
The railway line linking George and Knysna was completed in 1928 and the Kaaimans River bridge links two of South Africa’s most scenic places by rail.
Properties at Victoria bay are seldom put on the market. There are plans to create a marine sanctuary in the area
