The photograph below shows the Franschhoek station in 1912. It was part of a 30 km branch line operated by the S A R. Opened in 1904, the line connected Franschhoek and Paarl; however, despite attempts at modernisation, regular passenger services ceased in 1993.
The Franschhoek Wine Tram has repurposed the old route for visitors to enjoy.
The Franschhoek Wine Tram hop-on hop-off tour is one of the best ways to discover the true essence of the Franschhoek Valley – picturesque vineyards, breathtaking scenery, warm hospitality, world-class cuisine, fine wines and a 300-year history. The trip is fun, and you get to enjoy the scenery, warm hospitality, world-class cuisine, fine wines and a 300-year history.
The hop on hop-off wine tram is perfect for visitors who don’t know the area well. The great thing is you do not have to worry about driving between estates, and you can enjoy a relaxed day out without being the designated driver. You get given a route map and you can choose which estates to visit.
Note:The later trams can get full during peak season.
