Waenhuiskrans cave

Cave in Arniston

Waenhuiskrans cave

Waenhuiskrans means wagon house cliff. It is said that the cave is so named because it is so big that an ox wagon could do a full turn inside it. The Waenhuiskrans cave lies just off the shore of Arniston. Follow the rather tricky walk past the Cape Nature signposts to the Waenhuiskrans Nature Reserve. You can only access the cave at low tide. Even then, you have to wade through shallow water to get to the cave entrance. Be careful of slippery seaweed.

When you get to Arniston you will see a signpost to the cave. Follow the road to the beach parking area where you can leave your car. Follow the signposts to the Nature Reserve until you see a stone staircase leading into the water. You can reach the smaller section of the cave from here. Once inside, you’ll need to crawl through a small opening at the back to access the larger cave. There are rock pools to explore on the way.
