Vrolijkheid Nature Reserve lies in the Breede River valley. The landscape here is rugged sandstone with underlying shale formations. The vegetation in this rocky part of the Little Karoo is known as the arid Robertson Karoo. Succulents that abound here are trees and shrubs such as guarri, karee and melkbos. The animals you will see are Klipspringer, grysbok, grey rhebok, and springbok, which are common at Vrolijkheid.  Birds are well represented with 175 species, including the jackal buzzard, African and pale chanting goshawk, plus the spectacular black and African fish eagles. The dams here also attract waterbirds. There are pathways in the wildflower garden and 5 thatched gazebos for picnics.

The Western Cape is home to hundreds of bird species. For full identification and seasonal details, see this comprehensive Western Cape bird guide.
