The Ertjieskloof Dam

The Ertjieskloof Dam (often mistakenly called the Coetzenburg Dam) is a dam near Stellenbosch on the western slopes of the Hottentots-Holland Mountains. This dam is on the south side of the Stellenbosch University campus at the Coetzenburg Stadium. It is a popular summer cooling-down spot for students and Stellenbosch residents. Around the dam, there is a network of footpaths and good opportunities for mountain biking and running trails. It was built in 1960.

It is a groundfill dam that has recently been repaired and upgraded because a geological fault line caused leaking, and has a capacity of 79 000m3. This dam and the nearby Welgevallen Dam (Paul Roos Dam) are the property of the University of Stellenbosch and are both entitled to a quota of water from the Eerste River. The water is used to irrigate the sports fields.
