Swartvlei Beach
Swartvlei Beach is great for long walks, fishing is allowed and swimming is safe in some areas but do be aware of the riptides and currents. Dog walking and horse riding are allowed on this beach. Dolphins are often spotted surfing the waves and whales can be seen between October and December. The beach is also a breeding ground for the rare African Black Oyster Catcher. There is also a lot of other marine birdlife to see.
The Western Cape coastline is home to many seabird species. For full identification and seasonal details, see this comprehensive Western Cape bird guide.
Many rock pools are exposed which are full of interesting marine life, from sea urchins to starfish. The deeper pools are great for both snorkeling and swimming. Facilities at the beach include showers and toilets. Lifeguards are on duty during the holidays. There is a walkway to the beach and plenty of parking.
Shells can often be found on this beach, especially after winter storms and low tide. If you plan to collect shells, please follow local regulations and take only empty shells. Shell identification guide
