Shipwreck museum

Museum in Bredasdorp

Our Coastline is known as the “Graveyard of Ships” Over 250 vessels and 2,500 people lost their lives in its treacherous waters. The ships have met their sad ends on the southern shores of South Africa since Europeans first sailed past the Cape of Storms.

The exhibits consist of artefacts, furniture, figureheads, shipping equipment, household articles, lifebuoys, newspaper cuttings, and scale models. Plusremains from four of the area’s most significant wrecks,  the Arniston, the Birkenhead, the Queen of the Thames and the Oriental Pioneer.

Scale models show a ship breaking up and disintegrating, and being buried by sand.

The Shipwreck museum is housed in the historical old church building, with the village museum in the church hall in the centre of town. The largest collection of bottles in South Africa is on display here. The village museum houses a coach and carriage section with old wagons, carts, hearse and a fire engine.
