Silvermine nature reserve
Silvermine Nature Reserve was originally established in 1898 as a water catchment area and reservoir to help supply the growing population of Cape Town with water. The reserve takes its name from early silver mining attempts in the area, although no commercially viable silver deposits were ever found.
In the early 1900s, parts of the area were used for military training by the South African Army. During World War II, it also served as an anti-aircraft training ground. In 1960, the area was officially declared a nature reserve to protect its unique fynbos vegetation, wildlife, and important water catchment systems
The Reserve forms part of the Table Mountain National Park and is an important conservation area for indigenous fynbos vegetation. Entrance is at the top of Ou Kaapse Weg, where a small fee is charged. Dogs welcome (provided you have a My Activity Permit or a Wild Card, see the Colourdots coastal and nature use guide for all permits and advice), hike or run the trails.
Explore nearby caves and waterfalls, Bird watching, swim in the dam, Braai, and picnic in the reserve. This peaceful braai spot is open for picnics all year round. It is a high-risk fire zone, so braaiing is only permitted in winter. There are over 40 secluded sites scattered around the reservoir. Swimming in the reservoir is permitted.
Silvermine Nature Reserve is home to many bird species. For full identification and seasonal details, see this comprehensive Western Cape bird guide.
This is a great place to see fynbos. You’ll see proteas, ericas, and restios, yellow proteas, and vibrant orange pincushions.
Keep an eye out for local fauna our Western Cape Wildlife Guide explains what animals you may see while hiking or exploring nature reserves. You might see baboons, porcupines, tortoises, Cape Sugarbirds with their distinctive long tails, and reptiles like the “bloukop koggelmander” with its sapphire-coloured head.
Hike at Steenberg Peak and Silvermine East
This fairly difficult hike in the Silvermine Nature Reserve, however, it is on the side with great views of Muizenberg. It offers fantastic views. There are interesting rock formations and plenty of untouched fynbos to see. The slopes on the east side are covered in ericas in various shades of pink, depending on the season, while yellow leucadendrons and Asteraceae flower in spring
