Old Girls’ Public School

Heritage building in Beaufort West

The Old Girls’ Public School is a double-story stone building. The main facade consists of a triangular main gable with Palladian windows.  A pair of split rectangular gables is placed over each of the other windows. The side windows have split semi-circular gables.  There is a louvred lantern roof ventilator.  The building opened on 10 October 1879, but it was only utilised as the  Girls’ Public School from 15th July 1891. An east wing for a nursery school was added in 1897, which was opened in 1899. This is a fine example of Victorian public architecture. It is currently used as municipal offices.
